Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Friday vowed
that civil servants in the state will continue to receive their
salaries as at when due during his administration.
Several state governments have not been able to pay their
workers since the country’s revenue dipped with the decline
in the price of crude oil.
However, Enugu State, during the tenure of the immediate
past governor, Sullivan Chime, was among a few states
where workers received their salaries regularly.
The state is currently not owing its workers.
Ugwuanyi promised to maintain the record.
The governor made the pledge when members of the
governing council and management of National Open
University of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
“Government is a continuum, my administration is determined
to fulfill all promises made by the immediate past
government,” he added.
Ugwuanyi expressed hopes that the current cash crunch,
which has affected several state governments, will soon
become a thing of the past.
The governor equally asked the management of the open
university to provide more study centres in Enugu State.
He explained that such a measure would boost education in
the state, and also complement his administration’s resolve
to promote learning.
He also expressed delight at the appointment of a royal
father from the state, Ambassador Lawrence Akubuzor, by
the institution as its first chancellor.
Ugwuanyi described the development as an honour done to
Enugu State.
The governor further promised that his administration will
collaborate with the institution to empower the youths and
create employment in the state.
Earlier in his address, the Vice Chancellor of the university,
Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, said the NOUN delegation was at
the Enugu Government House to congratulate Ugwuanyi on
his victory at the poll, and also to formally present a letter of
appointment to Akubuzor as the first chancellor of the
institution.
Tenebe informed Ugwuanyi that the Enugu centre of the
NOUN was among the best in the country.
