Buhari backs local councils autonomy

President Muhammadu Buhari has said his administration will support a constitutional amendment to free local governments from the stranglehold of state governments.

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said in a statement that Buhari made his position known when he received the leadership of the Association of Local Governments in Nigeria (ALGON) on Thursday in Abuja.

He stated that the president told ALGON leadership that the amendment, when carried out, would better the lot of Nigerians at the community level.

He stressed that a constitutional amendment was urgently required to clearly define the relationship among the three tiers of government. He described the frosty relationship between states and local governments as “very serious constitutional problem.

“The relationship between the three tiers of government is not a very nice one, especially that between the local governments and the states.

“The states feel like they own the local governments if they are of the same party.  It is worse if they are not.
“This is a very serious constitutional problem and unless there is absolute clarity and transparency, the relationship will continue to be exploited against the interest of the ordinary people of the country.”

Buhari advised the ALGON executives to hold consultations with their people and lawyers with a view to presenting a bill that would seek  constitutional amendment to free the councils from the stranglehold of the states.
He said “this will limit the damage they can do to you. The quicker you do this the better, so that you can help your people much more.”

He acknowledged the request by ALGON for the release of 3.2 billion dollars wrongfully deducted by Federal Government for the final settlement of foreign debts in 2005.

President Buhari said the government recognised the judgment debt but the timing of the request for its repayment was wrong, given the current economic situation in the country.

In his remarks, the acting ALGON National President, Alhaji Ibrahim Karaye, presented a six-point demand to the President, which included the repayment of the 3.2 billion dollars debts.

He stressed the need to ensure the sovereignty of local government administration in the country.
The ALGON leader expressed the association’s full support to the President’s programmes on improving security, anti-corruption campaign and economic revival.

Photos: Two notorious female thieves nabbed in Akwa Ibom

Nemesis finally caught up with two alleged female thieves, who specialized in robbing shops, supermarket, boutiques and restaurants in Akwa Ibom State under the pretence of wanting to buy goods. The suspects identified as Grace Ekpo and Mfon Daniel from Itiam Ikot Ebia, Uyo Local Government, were nabbed by some members of the public and handed over to men of the Akwa Ibom Police Command last Thursday, shortly after robbing a boutique located at No. 15 Ekpo Obot Street.

Narrating her ordeal, the sales girl Imaobong Isaiah said:"The two girls enter my shop on a pretence to buy from me but after picking all the costly female hand bags, shoes, men gens, hand watches and cloths worth forty-five thousand naira; instead of them to pay for what they have bought, they sent me to go and buy them drinks. So, I went to buy drinks for them at the nearby shop. As I returned, I met them making calls, and immediately their operational Keke man who was on a standby to pick them came and the went inside the Keke with all my cloths without paying. So, I tell them to give me my cloths, they refused. So, I started shouting, help! Thief! Thief! But the Keke man had already moved. As God would like it, luck ran out on them, the people around and people using car pursued them and caught them."

On interrogation, the suspects admitted to being involved in all kinds of robbery.

"When we entered people shop, anything you sale we will pack the most costly ones; after which we will asked you to get us water or send you on an errand, that will make us run away with the goods without paying for it. We rob women in Keke, we pick recharge card bags and anything that would fetch us quick money."

Akpororo Releases Gosple Musical Banger: IGWE (Free Mp3 Download)

Award-Wining, Song-Singing, and Talent-Grooming Comedian of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has recorded and released a spanking new joint. He titles it Igwe, and this one is a street-smart, gospel-wild praise.
Produced by Don Zenith, this one Single is the first he would release since he was made an Airtel Ambassador, and since his first Thank AM O Album, which he published all-free on his website, Akpororo.tv

In 2010 he won the mtn/opa Williams national comedy challenge (calabar zone) and after that he came to loose twice in two different comedy challenge (Ay's open mic & Joker @ Terra) to one very comedian (Whalemouth) but he never gave up, little did he know he would still loose again at the national finals of National comedy challenge, with 3 lost battles in 1year, a young man might naturally loose hope but that young man's namecant just be Akpororo. A multi-talented guru who can sing, dance, crack jokes, play football and still come out number 1 in all, his name is Bowoto Jeptha.

But in 2011 he went comically mad? He would turn upside down any stage he mounted and would crack out any spirit of sadness with laughter, many has argued that his growth is the fastest ever in the industry of comedy and yes they have a point.
In the same year he produced a song that went viral tagged: days of Elijah but he isn't stopping yet, in 2014 he created his own stage tagged Akpororo vs Akpororo which broke history as the 1st gospel show that was sold out but is he stopping yet, NO... He went further to sell out that same show in 2015 in an even bigger hall (Eko Hotels & Suites).
And now he's out with a musical banger again, this one he called: IGWE. you need to hear this.

COLUMN: A presidential villa without the President

The Presidential Villa, Abuja houses the President, the Vice
President as well as members of their immediate families.
Some presidential aides also reside inside the well-fortified
premises.
Apart from residing there, these Nigeria’s first two citizens
also have their offices inside the Villa. While the President
can trek from his official residence to his office in less than
five minutes, the same cannot be said of the Vice President
who will have to be driven for about 10 minutes from his
Aguda House official residence before getting to his office.
The proximity or otherwise of their residences to their offices
is not the focus of this piece.
Three weeks after their inauguration, the President and Vice
President have yet to relocate to the Villa. That also is not
news to many.
The focus of this write-up is however how the continued
absence of these men of power from the seat of power has
made the place desolate and deserted.
Any part of the Villa you step in lately, desolation will stare
you at the face. Even the scanty number of cars in the car
parks bears attestation to the fact that the place is
deserted.
Since the two men are not inside, there are no top
government officials or politicians to visit the seat of power.
The open space designated for convoy vehicles of dignitaries
had been deserted for weeks.
Even sales at the Officers’ Mess located near one of the car
parks, I was told, had reduced drastically. Apart from
members of staff who buy food and assorted drinks from the
mess, it also services drivers and aides of big men and
women who visit the Villa daily. While their principals are
busy inside with the purpose of their visits, their aides,
including security details and drivers, keep themselves busy
in the mess either with hot plates of food or “perspiring”
bottles of either alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks.
All these have changed since the two big men have not
turned up in the Villa. Members of staff who turned up very
early throughout the first week after the President’s
inauguration have since come to terms with the fact that he
is not in a hurry to relocate.
To complicate the issue, the President has yet to name
principal aides who could have filled the gap by making
things happen inside the Villa. From the President’s side to
the Vice President’s Wing, offices are deserted.
There is no Chief of Staff yet; no Principal Secretary; no
Deputy Chief of Staff; among others. The few that have been
appointed cannot resume inside the Villa when their principal
is still outside. So they operate from outside.
Despite the absence of the President and the Vice President
however, water-tight security is still maintained in the seat of
power. Those entering are still subjected to security
screening at different points.
Let us do it again next weekend.
